Nordic Roma Artist Platform projects artist nomination and panel discussion 28.11. at 16-19
Artists of today lack teeth, innovation. Artists possess an important role as promoters and forerunners of their nations. What’s up with multicultural arts in Finland and Nordic countries? Do cultural majorities have their proper place within the systems of societies? What does it require from the system of the ruling minority, based on bureaucracy and jurisprudence, that is being maintained one-dimensionally by capital and market society?
Place: Nordic Cultural Point (Kaisaniemenkatu 9, Helsinki)
Nordic Roma Artist Platform (NRAP) is an international initiative led by a world-renowned Finnish author and all-rounder in culture Cultural Counsellor Veijo Baltzar. The purpose of the project is to promote the position of Roma arts and artists in the Nordic countries and internationally. The international jury of NRAP, represented by cultural authorities of the Nordic states, will gather in the city of Kuopio 26.-27.11.2018 to nominate an artist group capable of providing encouraging examples for youth to look up to. The names of nominated artists will be publicized at the press/nomination and public discussion event, held at Nordic Cultural Point, Helsinki on 28 November.
The group of nominated artists will get to design and realize artistic portfolios in cooperation with NRAP staff. The portfolios will be published in Nordic languages at nrap.info website. The aim of the website is to become an established and known source of information about Roma arts and artists. Festival organizations and cultural producers in Nordic countries and Europe will be informed about the website. The project will culminate in a Nordic award ceremony “The Emerging Roma artist of the year”, held in May 2019.
Nordic Roma Artist Platform is coordinated by Creative Association for Arts and Culture DROM. The project is supported by Nordisk Kulturfond and Kone Foundation.
