Multilingualism and diversity as a resource in the cultural field

Logo of the project

The project Multilingualism and diversity as a resource in the cultural field – employment and integration through literature in the Nordic Countries (2016-2018) worked in the area of multilingual literature. The project supported the inclusion of non-dominant language literature in the Nordic literary field from the point of view of both authors and readers.

The project focused on the language rights of the authors and readers, and intercultural dialogue through literature. It connected and made visible organizations, projects and practices from different Nordic countries and supports their interaction. The concrete aims of the project included the collection and sharing data related to multilingual expertise in the Nordic countries, administration and promotion of Nordic Multilingual Month (yearly 21.2.-21.3) and realizing reports related to language-specific literary fields in the Nordic Countries (Arabic 2017, Sámi, Kurdish and Somali 2018). Issues related to this project were presented on the blog of the project, Multilingua-lit and regarding Multilingual month at multilingualmonth.org.

The project was funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and it forms part or a three-year-long project "An Open and Innovative Nordic Region with Healthy People 2020 – Equal Opportunities for Welfare, Culture, Education and Work".

The steering group of the project included representatives of the Nordic institutions and non-dominant language writers.

Background

The project is based on previous collaboration between Culture for All -service, several organizations of the Nordic literary field and projects where language diversity or freedom of expression are especially present. In 2015-2016 Culture for All collected information about the position of non-dominant language authors in Nordic institutions. This information was published in March 17th in the report Wandering Words. Comparisons of the position of writers who write in non-dominant languages in Nordic support structures of literature. In March 2016 Culture for All Service organized a Nordic seminar Literature Without Borders in Helsinki. It gathered writers and specialists of literature from different Nordic countries to reflect on the situation of non-dominant language authors. The seminar was organised together with The Finnish Critics’ Association, The Finnish Reading Centre, Finnish PEN, The International Cultural Centre Caisa, The Nordic Culture Point and Sivuvalo Project.
