Beats of a Bards Country is a stage biographical drama on the Afrobeat King Fela Kuti. The societal and cultural processes related to his life are realized through song, dance and music. A multicultural coordination in the art form by Finnish and African artists. Afro Funk Beats played by Finnish top musicians.
The play tries to make sense of happenings in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially Nigeria. We argue that drama provides that platform, as could be seen in ‘Beats of a Bard´s Country´, a stage biographical drama on the Afro beat king Fela Kuti.
The contemporary crisis or more broadly disorder in Africa can be properly located within its colonial heritage, resulting to social systems with absolute powers, and autocratic tendencies. Over time, this has stunted economic development, created corruption and poverty, ethnic and religious extremism etc. which continues to characterize the continent.
To this end, there is need to interrogate on what is happening in Africa today (although, there are huge differences between countries) with the rest of the world; explaining processes in their proper historical context (away from the confines of the academia) in a simple language everybody will understand.
African pot served during the rhythms of the bards. Food from Nigeria, Somalia, Morocco, Demokratic Republic of Kongo, Senegal and Gambia.
