The conference is part of the programme for the Finnish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers 2011 and is arranged by the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (MSH), the Nordic Centre for Welfare and Social Issues (NVC) and the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Finland (THL).

The conference has several objectives. The first one is to elucidate how the Nordic Model can contribute to international welfare strategies and specify its important strength in the social political areas. The second main objective is to clarify the contents within the Nordic and international welfare programs, discuss their consequences and strengthen the Nordic and international processes in relation to social security and welfare. It is important to point out the challenges and alternatives for the future. The global, demographic, social and financial changes constitute a strong pressure on the welfare systems and the ways the Nordic welfare states act in a global context.
