Beyond Technique - Searching for Authenticity Disability-inclusive Workshop in Zodiak 7. - 11.4.2014

Australian choreographer and teacher Philip Channells leads Beyond Technique - searching for authenticity, a five-day disability-inclusive dance masterclass with a public outcome in Zodiak.

Philip Channells is Australia´s leading expert in disability-inclusive dance practice. He is the Creative Director of Dance Integrated Australia and is an Ambassador for Bundanon Trust´s Artist in Residence Program. Throughout this course he focuses on inclusive dance practice for volunteer, emerging and professional artists with and without disability.

BEYOND TECHNIQUE - SEARCHING FOR AUTHENTICITY

Class description:

Channells will use his work 'Beyond Technique - searching for authenticity' to challenge and inspire dancers to look for a new and authentic quality of movement from their own life experience. He uses contemporary dance and improvisation techniques in daily workshops to inform the beginnings of creating new movement and dramaturgical material.

There are several volunteer positions available for the following roles:

• Choreographic / Workshop Assistant (Professional & Emerging Dancers)

• Workshop Assistant (Artist with Disability).

This 5-day process-led intensive is designed in 3 parts:

Part 1: Professional Development (days 1 & 2)

What: Deepen your understanding of working in an inclusive-dance environment and gain new skills in choreographic practice. This is a fast-paced course that introduces contemporary dance techniques and adaptability to highlight the function and purpose of movement while retaining authenticity in a self-devised creative process.

Who: Dance students, emerging and professional artists (choreographers, directors, dancers, physical performers), dance / theatre educators, teachers, disability sector staff and volunteers.

Part 2: Skills Development & Practice (days 3 & 4)

What: This is an action-packed course that introduces young people with disability to contemporary dance techniques. It is designed to provide a platform to put new knowledge into practice in an environment shared with people with and without disability.

Who: All of the above in Part 1 with additional high school and tertiary level students with and without disability. Everyone will have a distinct thirst for knowledge and experience.

Part 3: Studio Showing (day 5)

What: Based on the previous four days work, the final Masterclass will be dedicated to presentation - a final open studio showing of the work in progress.

Who: All of the above including invited personnel and audience
