The Content of the Exhibition
The exhibition shows works by European painters who deal with the situation and position of the Romani people in their art. The mission of the exhibition is to promote multiculturalism and oppose discrimination by means of contemporary art. The exhibition tries to raise awareness among the majority about the condition and identity of the Romani people. The exhibition approaches identities in relation to "otherness" from the pespectives of ethnical minority and sex/gender.
Most of the artists in the exhibition are Romani women, for their thoughts, interpretations of life and surroundings, have made impossible possible. They are the pioneers who - against all the prejudices - have become professional artists. At the same time they have crushed the myth about the unvisible Romani woman.
The Questions That Illustrate the Exhibition Themes
How do the Romani artists view the world, in which they live and their own identity in it? Is it possible to examine being Romani on the good/bad scale? How does the sex/gender of an artist or a viewer influence on the art interpretation? Is woman a "sex"? Does "sex" even exist? What is the contemporary art of the Romani and how does it manifest? What is "otherness" in different cultures? How does it feel to be simultaneously both inside and outside the culture? What is the dignity of the Romani? Is dignity of a woman different to human dignity? What is the future of the Romani people?
