The need for a personal assistant should be verifiable in multiple ways

We occasionally hear about situations where a personal assistant is granted free entry only if the customer has an EU Disability Card. However, the need for support or assistance should not require the possession of an EU Disability Card. The EU Disability Card is voluntary, and not having one should not prevent participation or access to help.
Let’s remember: the EU Disability Card is a voluntary tool – not the only way to demonstrate the need for support.
The need for assistance should also be verifiable through other means, such as:
- A visible aid (e.g., wheelchair, mobility scooter, white cane)
- A document or other verifiable information regarding the need for support
- The customer's own account of their need for an assistant
According to the Non-Discrimination Ombudsman, neither the Non-Discrimination Act nor the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities defines a specific format for how a person with a disability can demonstrate their need for reasonable accommodation.
Offering diverse ways to demonstrate the need for assistance benefits everyone involved.
Equity is best achieved when customers’ needs are met with flexibility, respect, fairness, and clarity.
