Supreme Court ruling regarding public event in non-accessible spaces
The Supreme Court (KKO) has ordered newspaper Turun Sanomat to pay compensation to a man using an electric wheelchair. The man was unable to participate in a book club organized by the newspaper.
The case concerned interview and discussion events organized by Turun Sanomat in early 2018. The events were held in a restaurant with stairs at the entrance. Because of these stairs, the man using an electric wheelchair was unable to enter the premises.
According to the Supreme Court, continuing the literary events in non-accessible spaces constituted indirect discrimination within the meaning of the Non-Discrimination Act. The KKO ordered Turun Sanomat to pay the man 2,000 euros in compensation under the Non-Discrimination Act.
