With all Senses! — Miniature Sculptures and Portraits from The Y.A. Jäntti Collections

12 September 2015 - 10 January 2016 at the Tikanoja Art Museum, Vaasa

Feel art

See, feel and experience art at the pedagogical autumn exhibition With all Senses! — Miniature Sculptures and Portraits from the Y. A. Jäntti Collections. At Tikanoja Art Museum more than a hundred artworks from the large collection of Yrjö A. Jäntti, the former CEO of the publishing company WSOY, will be displayed in a novel way: there will be a sea of sculptures, shadow play and sensory perception.

Different materials

The artists have used a range of techniques to express various things through their art. Plaster, bronze, granite, clay and wood all feel, smell and look different. Through soft cotton gloves visitors are given a unique opportunity to explore the variety of artwork surfaces with their fingers. The exceptionally large and high-quality collection of miniature sculptures includes works by, among others, Jussi Mäntynen, Felix Nylund, Walter Runeberg and Essi Renvall.

Portraits

In the exhibition visitors encounter various types of people who have been captured in portraits. The portraits tell stories about interesting persons, their destinies and situations in their lives. The exhibition shows many pearls of Jäntti's collection, such as works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt, Jalmari Ruokokoski and A. W. Finch.

Yrjö Aarne Jäntti Collections

The collection of the enthusiastic art collector Yrjö Aarne Jäntti (1905—1985) represents Finnish art from the late 19th century to the 1980s. The collection includes paintings, graphics, drawings, sculptures and medals. The exhibition offers a wide spectrum of art in Finland. Y. A. Jäntti had a long career working for WSOY; during the period 1952—1968 he was CEO of the company. He made his first art purchases in the late 1920s. He subsequently donated his art collection to the city of Porvoo.

The exhibition is produced by Tikanoja Art Museum in collaboration with Porvoo Museum.
