Reading EuropeAn Drama Festival - R.E.A.D#1 6.-8.10.2014

A new drama reading festival R.E.A.D presents new European drama in October in Helsinki.

Reading EuropeAn Drama Festival, R.E.A.D. -festival, is going to extend the centre of Helsinki from 6 to 8 October, 2014. For the first time, R.E.A.D. -festival will present new European drama and bring together international theatre professionals who are living and working in Finland. During the festival, audience will explore fresh texts from Germany, Hungary, France, England, Norway , Russia, Italy and Estonia. The project is part of the European Theatre Collective´s long-term effort to present and facilitate international artists living in Finland.

Themes of selected texts are familiar beyond national borders. The programme includes Estonian Piret Jaaks´ To See Pink Elephants - contemporary times reflecting play, an Italian Ana Candida de Carvalho Carneiro´s Babel and the Russian Valentin Krasnogorovin´s Pelicans of the Wilderness. Dennis Kelly´s The Ritual Slaughter of the Gorge Mastromas that had premiered at London´s Royal Court Theatre last year will represent new English drama. Nordic humour master Fredrik Brattberg will introduce to his new dark comedy The Returning. The relationship between art and viewer is discussed in the German Katharina Schmitt´s play SAM. Jean-Luc Lagarce´s modern classic Just the end of the world was selected choice from France. Hungarian play Géza Boy by Háy János will get us into existential matters of small community.

Directors of drama readings are Lija Fischer, David Kozma, Aleksi Barrière, Aleksis Meaney, Alexey Vasilchenko, Luis Raposo da Cruz and Davide Giovanzana. All of them are multicultural directors working in Finland.

Open discussion about Nordic Drama in Finland will take place during the R.E.A.D festival on October 7th. Speakers of the panel discussion: director of TINFO Hanna Helavuori, director of the National Theatre Mika Myllyaho, dramaturg of the Swedish Theatre Linnea Stara and Norwegian professor Knut Ove Arntzen. Moderator of the discussion is David Kozma, R.E.A.D festival´s ideologist and initiator, artistic director of European theatre collective. Moreover, every evening informal R.E.A.D festival clubs are open for all.
