Disability Film Festival KynnysKINO 13-17.4.2011
KynnysKINO08 will kick off simultaneously in Helsinki and Turku 13-17.4.2011. Helsinki venue is Ateneum Hall in the Ateneum Art Museum and Turku venue is the Siltakino. In addition to screening full-length films, special themes this year include animations and cartoons. Special presentations will also be held before the screenings, including a talk by Kaisa Leka on cartoonist John Callahan. The festival will include a film about Callahan entitled Touch Me Someplace I Can Feel (2007).
Director of the film Simone de Vries will also be our guest.
Translators Sanni Purhonen and Idastiina Räsänen in turn will lead a
discussion on Richard Rieser's book Disabling Imagery: A Teaching Guide to
Disability and Moving Image Media, which is being published this spring in
Finnish by Into Kustannus.
The programme includes the new Finnish feature film Vähän kunnioitusta
("Little Respect" 2010) by Pekka Karjalainen, as well as a diverse selection
of international offerings from Spain, Germany, the UK, Poland and elsewhere.
The main organiser of the event is the Threshold Organisation (Kynnys ry), a
human rights organisation for the disabled, in collaboration with Ateneum Hall
and Turku City Library. Both venues are fully accessible and non-smoking with
plenty of space for wheelchairs.
