Opening. Becoming an agent in the field of arts and culture in Finland

Opening. Becoming an agent in the field of arts and culture in Finland is a project which supports the equal participation of non-Finnish-born artists and cultural workers in the Finnish arts and culture sector. The project is carried out together with the Center for Cultural Policy Research Cupore and Globe Art Point, and it is supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Background

Global mobility is one of the megatrends of the last decades and it has brought many artists and cultural workers from different countries to Finland. It is also up to the Finnish arts and culture sector to react to this situation. How can artists from abroad continue their artistic career in Finland? How can cultural workers from different countries influence what is happening in the Finnish arts and culture sector? How do arts and cultural institutions open their doors to people of different backgrounds not just as audiences but also as agents?

Aims

The project Opening maps the employment of non-Finnish-born artists and cultural workers through a study carried out by the Center for Cultural Policy Research Cupore and through participatory observation carried out by the Culture For All Service. Globe Art Point supports the project as an expert in questions related to the equality and integration of non-Finnish-born artists and cultural workers.

The project’s Diversity Educator Martina Marti will observe four national and/or state-subsidized cultural institutions using job shadowing methods to understand how cultural diversity is taken into consideration and what obstacles to inclusion there may be. Based on these observations the project develops creative, participatory education packages with which obstacles to equal participation can be made visible and the competences of non-Finnish-born professionals better recognized and acknowledged. The aim is to promote their entry into Finnish society and work life.

Concrete proposals for actions and the results of the research by Cupore will be presented in a seminar organized by Globe Art Point at the end of 2018.
